Universal Plastic’s Data Space Kit
Gijón, October 2025
What is the Data Spaces Kit?
- It’s the “big sibling” of the well-known Kit Digital, also run as a public grant programme by red.es
- It aims to help public and private entities join eligible data spaces.
- Its goal is to subsidise the costs entities have incurred — or will incur — to integrate into a data space, whether partially or fully.
- Grants are awarded on a non-competitive basis, meaning on a first-come, first-served basis until funds run out.
A step toward data-driven ocean governance
Universal Plastic® has been officially incorporated into the Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS), the global network driven by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO).
This step reinforces our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, and places Universal Plastic within the global infrastructure driving digital, cooperative ocean monitoring.

What does “joining a data space” mean?
WHAT DOES “JOINING A DATA SPACE” MEAN?
For an entity to be eligible, it must meet certain requirements:
- Choose or take part in an “eligible” data space that meets the criteria set out in the governing rules.
- Carry out the technical and organisational work needed to interoperate with that space: adapting systems, ensuring data governance, setting up interfaces or APIs, meeting security and privacy standards, and so on.
- Use the UNIVERSAL PLASTIC APP for beach clean-ups and provide data under UNIVERSAL PLASTIC’s usage policies.
Document the costs and actions carried out to submit them with the grant application ( guided by Universal Plastic’s administrative team ).
In other words: expressing interest isn’t enough — you need to carry out the technical, operational and regulatory steps required to integrate into that data-sharing environment.
