Beach Cleanup in Asturias!

The sun greeted us as we gathered at Playa Xagó, Asturias, a pristine beach known for its breathtaking natural beauty and imposing waves, attracting both surfers and nature lovers. Located on Spain’s northern coast, Xagó offered us an expansive stretch of white sand and dramatic cliffs—the perfect backdrop for our team-building day with Nina Woof.

At first glance, the beach appeared quite clean. However, as we began collecting plastics, our perspective quickly changed. To our surprise, we discovered both microplastics and larger plastic debris scattered throughout the area, hidden in the sand and among other waste.

The day kicked off with an introduction that highlighted a troubling reality: the impact of plastic on our planet. From polluted oceans to endangered marine life, we delved into understanding how everyday waste, particularly plastics, contributes to environmental degradation. We explained that this waste not only affects wildlife but also makes its way into our food chains through microplastics. Additionally, plastics release greenhouse gases during decomposition, exacerbating climate change. Every small piece of waste has a significant long-term impact.

Next, we introduced the functionality of our App. Participants learned how to scan different types of plastic waste, take photos of the collected plastics, and document their cleanup efforts. This hands-on approach allowed them to feel that they were genuinely contributing to environmental care, making the process not only educational but also deeply rewarding. With each scan and photograph, we witnessed the immediate impact of our actions, tracked our progress, and contributed to a broader global initiative to combat plastic waste.

The day concluded with a homemade picnic: a delicious and healthy Spanish tortilla accompanied by cake. It was the perfect ending to a day focused on well-being, both for the planet and for ourselves. With a sense of satisfaction, we bid farewell to Playa Xagó, feeling a renewed sense of purpose, more connected to one another, and committed to sustainability.

Nina Woof made this experience not just a team-building day but also a day of positive action for the environment. Excitingly, the campaign will now continue in India, where the remaining kilograms of plastic will be collected.
